Choosing the Right Mattress

on 26 April 2020 .

On average, we spend a third of our lives in bed. So when it comes to choosing a bed, it's vital to give it some thought. Here's a guide to help you shop and select the perfect mattress.

“Nothing makes you feel better than when you get into a hotel bed, and the sheets feel so good. Why shouldn’t you wake up like that every day? Spend money on your mattress and bedding because these things make a difference on your sleep and, ultimately, your happiness.”
BOBBY BERK

Before you hit the shops, spend some time to consider the following:

1. Mattress size

King, queen or single? If you’re sleeping with your partner, don’t choose a mattress smaller than a queen-size. Why? You can avoid being disturbed by your partner tossing and turning. Take into consideration your height, weight and build. As a rule of thumb, your bed should also be 10 to 15cm longer than the taller partner. If you’re over 1.8m tall, consider a mattress that’s longer than the standard. And the heavier you weigh, the firmer the tension you’ll need.

2. Comfort level

Do you prefer firm support or plush comfort? If you suffer from a bad back, it’s best to ask your chiropractor for recommendations.

3. Price range

A mattress can range from a few hundred to thousands of dollars. Think of your bed as an investment that will last you at least 10 years. A cheaper mattress may not last as long as a more expensive one. So always buy the best you can afford.

4. Shop together

Comfort is subjective. While some like the feel of plush comfort, others like the support of firm mattresses. If you’re shopping for a mattress for two, take your partner along with you. You’ll want to choose a bed that both of you find comfortable.

5. Test and try

Don’t be embarrassed to take your time to try out a selection of mattresses. And don’t merely sit on the edge or lie on your back for a few seconds. Wear comfortable clothing, remove your coat and shoes. Lie down for a few minutes in different sleeping positions. Spend some time on various mattresses to find out which one suits you best.
